Vice President J.D. Vance dispatched a letter to Iranian security chief Mohsen Rezaei on March 8 2024, under the direction of President Donald Trump, in a bid to restart stalled negotiations.
The letter, sent amid a backdrop of escalating hostilities, calls for a framework to negotiate rather than concrete terms for a peace settlement. It follows the February 28 clashes, when US‑Israeli strikes on Iranian positions reportedly killed former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior commanders, sparking Iran’s retaliatory strikes on Israeli and US assets and a blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is engaging mediators from Qatar and Pakistan to reopen the strait, but insists seven conditions must be met first: a regional ceasefire, unfrozen Iranian assets, lifted oil sanctions, and the end of the US naval blockade.
Tasnim news agency reported that Iran has received the letter but has not yet replied, warning that any stance undermining its firm framework would be unacceptable.
With the US maintaining a blockade on Iranian ports and the international community awaiting a response, the next key development will be Iran’s reply by March 31, after which the US may consider lifting its blockade on July 15 2024.
