Italy's Meloni Denounces AI-Generated Fake Image, Warns on Deepfake Threat

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has denounced an AI-generated deepfake image of her that circulated online, posting it on her Facebook page to expose its falsity and warn against the misuse of artificial intelligence. She identified a user who shared the image with a critical comment and urged the public not to amplify unverified content. Meloni acknowledged the altered image made her appear more flattering, writing, 'I must admit that whoever created them... has also improved me quite a bit.' But she stressed the serious danger posed by deepfakes, stating they are used to deceive, manipulate, and damage reputations through fabricated content. The incident comes amid ongoing legal action by Meloni over a previous deepfake case; she filed a libel suit in 2024 against a man from Sardinia accused of distributing AI-generated pornographic images using her likeness. That case remains active. Italy last September became the first EU country to enact comprehensive AI legislation, introducing criminal penalties for malicious use of AI, including deepfake creation, and restricting children's access. The law aligns with the EU AI Act and reflects Meloni's government's focus on regulating emerging technologies. Authorities have not confirmed whether Meloni will file new charges over the latest image, but the incident is expected to renew calls for enforcement of the country's AI regulations. The government will continue monitoring digital platforms for similar violations.
