Armed Man Shot by Secret Service Near White House, Juvenile Bystander Injured

US Secret Service agents shot an armed man in downtown Washington, D.C., on Monday after he fled on foot and opened fire when approached, Deputy Director Matthew Quinn told reporters. The incident occurred near the National Mall shortly after Vice President JD Vance's motorcade passed through the area, triggering a brief lockdown of the White House and surrounding grounds.
Quinn said agents identified the individual as suspicious and believed he was armed. When officers approached, the man drew his weapon and fired, prompting agents to return fire and wound him. The suspect was taken to a hospital; his condition is unknown.
A juvenile bystander sustained minor injuries and received medical attention at the scene. Quinn stated there was no evidence the vice president was the intended target and declined to speculate whether the incident was linked to recent attacks on former President Donald Trump. Cole Allen, 31, remains in custody over a separate assassination attempt on Trump in Washington last week.
The Secret Service confirmed the investigation is active and ongoing. Officials will assess security protocols and evidence collected at the scene in the coming days.
