Assam CM Links BJP's West Bengal Win to Anti-Infiltration Push

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 4, 2026, said the Bharatiya Janata Party's decisive victory in West Bengal would bolster measures against cross-border infiltration from Bangladesh. He addressed reporters in Guwahati after the BJP and its allies won 102 of 126 seats in the Assam Assembly elections.
Sarma stated the win in West Bengal was significant not only for that state but for the entire country, particularly the northeastern region. He argued that a strong BJP presence in West Bengal would enhance coordination on border security and citizenship verification.
The comments come amid ongoing political focus on illegal migration in border states. The BJP-led government in Assam has previously prioritized updates to the National Register of Citizens and enforcement of the Citizenship Act.
Sarma did not announce new policy actions but emphasized that the election results in West Bengal and Assam would create favorable conditions for regional security cooperation. The next review of border management protocols is expected during the upcoming Home Ministry consultations in New Delhi.
