New Weapons Charges Filed Against Suspect in Bondi Beach Mass Shooting
Australian authorities filed 19 new weapons-related charges against Naveed Akram, a suspect in the deadly December 2025 shooting at a Hanukkah celebration in Sydney's Bondi Beach that left 15 people dead. The charges were announced on May 6, 2026, by federal prosecutors handling the case.
Akram was previously charged with 59 counts, including murder, attempted murder, and committing a terrorist act, following the attack carried out by two gunmen at the Jewish holiday event. He has not yet been required to enter a plea on any of the charges.
The additional charges stem from forensic analysis of firearms and explosive materials linked to the attack and Akram's alleged associates. Federal police confirmed the evidence was referred by the Joint Counter Terrorism Team.
The court is expected to schedule a preliminary hearing within the next two weeks to determine the admissibility of evidence and set a timeline for future proceedings.
