BJP Appoints Amit Shah, JP Nadda as Central Observers for State Leadership Elections

The BJP on Tuesday appointed Union Home Minister Amit Shah as central observer for the election of its legislative party leader in West Bengal, a move signaling top-level oversight ahead of forming the state government. Union Minister JP Nadda was named central observer for the corresponding process in Assam, where the party has secured a third consecutive term.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini will serve as co-observer for the leadership election in Assam, while Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has been assigned the same role in West Bengal, according to a party notification. The appointments come one day after the assembly election results confirmed BJP victories in both states.
The BJP replaced the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and retained power in Assam after the results were declared Monday. The central observers will oversee the legislative party meeting to elect floor leaders, a procedural step before formal government formation.
The party is expected to finalize its leadership choices in both states within the coming days, with the central leadership closely monitoring coordination and unity among newly elected MLAs. The process will be followed by recommendations for chief ministerial candidates and cabinet formation.
