Tamil Nadu: TVK's Vijay Seeks Congress Backing to Form Government
CHENNAI, May 6 — Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam president C. Joseph Vijay has formally sought Congress support to form a government in Tamil Nadu after his party emerged as the single largest bloc with 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly. The party, contesting its first election, fell short of the majority mark, prompting immediate outreach to the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance constituent in New Delhi.
All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal confirmed receipt of the request and stated the party is evaluating the proposal to extend outside support. Congress won five seats in the election, positioning it as a potential kingmaker in the hung House alongside other regional players.
TVK sources confirmed that Vijay and senior party leaders have scheduled a meeting with Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar for Wednesday to stake claim to form the government. As leader of the largest party, Vijay is positioned to either assert his right to govern or request additional time to consolidate numbers.
The Governor’s Office will assess the claim under constitutional provisions before authorizing formal government formation proceedings. The Assembly is expected to convene shortly to administer the oath of elected members and initiate the floor test process.
