CEC Orders Immediate Arrests in West Bengal Post-Poll Violence Case

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar ordered the immediate arrest of individuals involved in post-poll violence and vandalism in West Bengal, an official said on Wednesday, May 6, 2026. The directive came after two people were killed and multiple political party offices were ransacked in the state on Tuesday.
The Election Commission issued the order in response to escalating law and order concerns following the conclusion of polling in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The incidents, primarily concentrated in key districts, included arson, property destruction, and attacks on party workers, the official said.
The Commission has directed state authorities to enforce strict action under relevant legal provisions to deter further violence. Security has been heightened in affected areas, and the EC is monitoring the situation closely.
The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
