Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Resigns After UDF Landslide Victory

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday tendered his resignation to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar after the Left Democratic Front (LDF) suffered a comprehensive defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections. The opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) secured a landslide victory, winning 102 seats in the 140-member house.
The LDF, which was seeking a third consecutive term, was reduced to 35 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured three seats. The results mark a significant political transition in Kerala, ending a decade of LDF governance.
Governor Arlekar has accepted the resignation and requested Vijayan to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new administration is established. The outgoing Chief Minister submitted the formal letter at the Raj Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram following the final declaration of results by the Election Commission.
The UDF is scheduled to convene a meeting of its newly elected legislators later this week to elect a parliamentary leader. Following the selection, the coalition will formally stake its claim to form the next government.
