Bengal on Edge: Tensions Rise as Residents Claim Threats from Local Politicians
The situation in West Bengal's Falta constituency is getting increasingly tense. Locals are claiming that they are being threatened and intimidated by Trinamool Congress (TMC) cadres. This comes just days before the vote count on May 4. The residents, including women, are voicing their concerns about their safety and well-being. It's not just the men who are speaking out – women are also sharing their stories of intimidation and harassment.
One local woman claimed that she was warned by a TMC member that if a certain group wins, they will burn down her house and cause bloodshed. Another woman alleged that despite voting for the TMC, they were still targeted.
The situation is so serious that security forces have been deployed in large numbers to the area. Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Rapid Action Force (RAF) are stationed at key locations. Even an armored CRPF vehicle has been deployed as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
This is not the only issue plaguing the area. Repolling is underway in 15 booths across Magrahat Paschim and Diamond Harbour constituencies following directions from the Election Commission of India. The Election Commission reported that voter turnout stood at 72.43 per cent as of 3 PM.
Meanwhile, a controversy has erupted over alleged irregularities in EVM strongrooms. The All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has filed a complaint against a Returning Officer at Khudiram Anushilan Kendra. The centre is currently being used as a strongroom for storing EVMs. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also alleged that a strong room was opened without authorisation, prompting an inquiry in which at least six officials have reportedly been suspended.
