Vijay Steps Up Alliance Push to Form Tamil Nadu Government After Poll Win

Actor Vijay has intensified efforts to stitch together a majority in Tamil Nadu after his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam became the single largest party in last month’s assembly election, defeating Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s DMK. TVK has formally requested support from the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Congress, CPI and CPM to form the government with Vijay writing directly to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan.
The Congress, which holds five seats, has already confirmed support for a Vijay-led government, while VCK, CPI and CPM — each with two seats — are yet to take a final decision. If all three back TVK, the combine would command 119 of 234 seats, crossing the halfway mark and unseating the DMK, which was reduced to 59 seats in the poll.
Election results show TVK won 108 seats, DMK 59 and AIADMK 47, with Vijay winning both Trichy East and Perambur constituencies. Sources indicate he is likely to relinquish Trichy East and retain Perambur, which would necessitate a bypoll in the vacated seat.
VCK leaders said they are still reviewing the request for support while alliance talks continue. The assembly will await final decisions from the smaller parties as TVK moves to lock in numbers for government formation.
