Bargi Dam Tragedy Leaves 11 Dead, Officials Questioned Over High-Wind Forecast
The Bargi Dam reservoir in central Madhya Pradesh is usually a popular spot for water sports and cruises. But on Thursday, a sudden storm swept in, catching the passengers off guard. The wind speeds were a staggering 74kmph, far higher than the recommended limit for water sports.
The tragedy has shocked the nation, and officials are now facing tough questions about their decisions. It turns out that the cruise was launched despite forecasts of high winds, which were ignored by the tourism department. The officials claimed to have received warnings from meteorological authorities, but it seems they didn't take them seriously.
In fact, water sports at the Lower Lake in Bhopal were suspended on the same day due to strong wind alerts. The national water sports coach, Mayank Thakur, even took extra precautions, halting operations when wind speeds reached 20-22kmph. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing athlete safety above all else.
The families of the victims are still reeling from the tragedy. Six members of the Soni family from Darhai village were on board the ship. While four survived, two young children, Viraj and Tamil, lost their lives. Their bodies were retrieved from the reservoir on Saturday. The search for the missing father and cousin continues.
The rescue efforts are ongoing, with over 200 personnel from police, SDRF, NDRF, and the Army combing the waters. The authorities have promised to continue the search until all passengers are accounted for. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, questions remain about the decisions made by the officials responsible for ensuring public safety.
