Single Vote Decides Tirupattur Seat in Tamil Nadu Assembly Election

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election saw one of its closest results in Tirupattur, where Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) candidate Seenivasa Sethupathy R. won by a single vote, unseating incumbent DMK MLA K.R. Periakaruppan, who had held the seat since 2006. Election officials confirmed the result after a recount and verification of postal ballots.
In Veppanahalli, DMK's P.S. Srinivasan defeated AIADMK incumbent K. Munusamy by 138 votes, securing 74,691 votes. In Kanniyakumari, AIADMK's Thalavai Sundaram retained his seat by 214 votes, defeating DMK's Mahesh, who received 74,831 votes. In Polur, TVK's R. Abishek won by 227 votes, defeating P. Saravanan of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam, a DMK ally.
The tight margins come amid a broader trend of fragmented voting patterns across Tamil Nadu, with smaller parties and new alliances making significant inroads. The Election Commission has stated that no petitions have been filed challenging the results as of May 6 morning.
The court will begin hearing any election petitions related to disputed results on May 10, as per standard procedure following state assembly elections.
