Congress Defers Decision on TVK Support, Rules Out BJP Role in Tamil Nadu Government

The Congress leadership, led by party president Mallikarjun Kharge, has directed its Tamil Nadu unit to take a final call on whether to support Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay's bid to form the government in the state, following a meeting in Delhi attended by Rahul Gandhi and senior leaders. TVK, which won 108 of the 234 assembly seats, has approached the Governor to stake its claim and seek time to prove majority on the floor of the House.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal confirmed that TVK sought support from the party and stated that the decision rests with the state unit, which must consider the electoral mandate. He emphasized that the Congress is committed to preventing the BJP from being part of any ruling alliance in Tamil Nadu, describing the election outcome as a vote for a secular government.
TVK leader Vijay has cited former Congress leader K Kamaraj as an inspiration, a point noted by party leaders during the discussions. With no party securing a majority, the political focus has shifted to alliance-building, as TVK requires additional support to reach the 118-seat threshold.
Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar said the election results reflect a public demand for change, particularly driven by youth and women voters, and that a detailed report has been submitted to central leadership. The state unit is continuing internal consultations ahead of its final decision.
