Bangladesh Urges Teesta Water Deal Review After BJP's West Bengal Win

Bangladesh has urged India to reconsider the long-pending Teesta river water sharing agreement, citing changed circumstances after the BJP's victory in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman made the appeal on May 5, 2026, marking Dhaka's first high-level response to the election outcome.
Rahman emphasized Bangladesh's longstanding demand for a fair share of Teesta waters, noting that the outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously opposed key aspects of the deal, stalling negotiations for years. He stated that any further delay or 'push in' from India would compel Bangladesh to take 'whatever measures are necessary.'
Indian officials have yet to issue a formal response, but sources indicate that the Ministry of External Affairs is reviewing the statement. The Teesta agreement, pending since 2011, aims to allocate water from the river between India and Bangladesh during the dry season.
The Bangladesh government plans to raise the issue during upcoming bilateral talks, with Foreign Secretary-level discussions scheduled for late May 2026.
