A.D. Thomas Elected Alappuzha MLA After Defeating Sitting Left MP

A.D. Thomas of the Indian National Congress has been elected as the new MLA for Alappuzha, defeating sitting legislator P.P. Chitharanjan of the CPI(M) by 21,015 votes. Thomas, 30, secured 81,065 votes in the by-election, breaking a stronghold of the Left in the coastal constituency.
Thomas rose to public prominence after being assaulted during the Nava Kerala Yatra in 2023, when he was bloodied while attempting to protest with a black flag. The incident, widely circulated, drew attention to political tensions in the state. He faced 18 legal cases linked to prior protests, according to police records.
Born in Mararikulam North to a fisherman father, Thomas joined student politics early, participating in campaigns over education and governance. His candidacy was framed by the Congress as a recognition of grassroots activism. Election results indicate a strong voter shift, with analysts noting the margin reflects both personal support and regional political change.
Thomas will take his seat in the Kerala Legislative Assembly this week. The Assembly session resumes next Monday, where he is expected to deliver his maiden speech.
