TVK’s Vijay Seeks Congress Backing to Form Tamil Nadu Government

TVK president C. Joseph Vijay formally sought Congress support on Tuesday to form a government in Tamil Nadu after his party won 108 seats, emerging as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly without a majority. Congress, a constituent of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance that won five seats, indicated it could back the bid.
All India Congress Committee general secretary K.C. Venugopal confirmed in New Delhi that TVK had submitted a formal request for backing. The overture follows the conclusion of vote counting in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, which left TVK short of the 118 seats required for a simple majority.
The Congress response aligns with its position within the broader Secular Progressive Alliance, even as it weighs direct support for a non-alliance partner. Party sources stated no final decision has been taken, but discussions will proceed at the leadership level in Chennai and New Delhi.
The Assembly will convene shortly for the election of the Speaker, followed by floor tests to determine government formation. Congress is expected to finalize its stance before the first confidence vote.
