Twin Explosion Incidents in Punjab Trigger Security Probe and Political Backlash
Two explosion incidents late Tuesday in Punjab—one near the Amritsar Cantonment and another at BSF Chowk in Jalandhar—triggered immediate security responses and ongoing investigations, officials said. No injuries were reported, but the proximity of the blasts to sensitive sites has escalated concern, with forensic teams collecting evidence in both cases.
In Amritsar, a loud blast was reported around 10:50 p.m. near Khasa close to the cantonment area. Police and army personnel responded swiftly, and the Bomb Disposal Squad conducted a sweep while the Forensic Science Laboratory collected samples for analysis. Authorities are determining the number and nature of the explosions.
In Jalandhar, a scooter caught fire following an explosion near BSF Chowk, witnesses said. The area was cordoned off, and fire and police teams responded. The scooter's owner was detained for questioning. Officials have not confirmed whether the fire resulted from a mechanical failure or an explosive device.
Political leaders reacted sharply, with Shiromani Akali Dal's Bikram Singh Majithia alleging a cover-up, while BJP's Parminder Singh Brar and Congress's Partap Singh Bajwa criticized the AAP-led state government for failing to ensure public safety. The Ministry of Home Affairs has been briefed, and intelligence agencies are reviewing inputs for possible links between the incidents.
Investigations are continuing, with forensic results pending. The Punjab Police and central agencies are expected to share findings within 48 hours, officials said.
