TVK Chief Vijay Stakes Claim to Form Tamil Nadu Government
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Joseph Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Arlekar on Wednesday and staked claim to form the government in the state. His party won 108 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections 2026, falling short of the 118-seat majority mark.
Five Congress MLAs have extended support to the TVK, raising Vijay's legislative strength to 113. The Congress party formally announced its decision to back the TVK-led alliance, breaking from its long-standing alliance partner, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK).
The TVK's performance marks a significant shift in Tamil Nadu's political landscape, ending the decades-long dominance of the DMK and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). Vijay, a film actor making his electoral debut, led his party to a sweeping victory across multiple regions.
Governor Rajendra Arlekar is expected to assess the claims and may invite Vijay to form the government if he demonstrates majority support. The Election Commission is yet to confirm the formal results, and the swearing-in ceremony is expected within the week.
