Residents Flag Delay in Pre-Monsoon Desilting Across Mumbai's East Zone Wards
Residents of Mumbai's Govandi, Deonar, and Shivaji Nagar have raised urgent concerns over the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) failure to commence pre-monsoon desilting of nullahs in Wards 134 through 141, including M (East), M (West), and L wards, as the monsoon season approaches. Lawyer Abdi Abas Sayyed, a local resident, formally flagged the inaction, warning of potential flooding in densely populated areas.
The desilting work, typically completed by May each year to prevent waterlogging, has not yet begun in the affected wards despite recurring monsoon-related flooding in past years. Sayyed emphasized that both major and minor nullahs remain uncleared, increasing the risk of drainage overflow during heavy rains.
BMC officials stated they are reviewing the schedule for desilting operations and cited logistical planning as a factor in the current delay. The corporation is expected to release a revised timeline for the commencement of work in the affected wards within the week.
The court hearing the matter has directed the BMC to file a status report on desilting preparedness by May 10, 2026.
