Pradhan Alleges Democracy 'Held at Gunpoint' in West Bengal

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday alleged that democracy in West Bengal is being "held at gunpoint," accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of refusing to respect the spirit of the electoral mandate. The senior BJP leader's remarks follow the recent 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections.
In a statement released on social media platform X, Pradhan asserted that democratic mandates in the state are being treated more like suggestions open to rejection than the voice of the people. He further questioned whether the current state leadership views political power as a responsibility or a personal entitlement.
The allegations highlight the escalating friction between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) regarding the legitimacy of the electoral process. Pradhan’s critique centers on the state government's response to the recent polling results and subsequent administrative actions.
The West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress leadership have yet to issue a formal rebuttal to the Union Minister's statements. Political observers expect a response from the Chief Minister's office as the state prepares for the next phase of legislative proceedings.
