NDA Retains Power in Puducherry After April 9 Assembly Elections
The AINRC-led NDA retained power in Puducherry following the April 9 Assembly elections, securing 16 of the 30 elected seats and positioning Chief Minister N Rangasamy to form the government for a second consecutive term. According to the Election Commission, the AINRC won 11 seats and was leading in one, while BJP captured four, and allies AIADMK and LJK each won one.
Rangasamy won both Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies, defeating E Vinayagam by 4,441 votes in Thattanchavady and SS Rangan by 7,050 votes in Mangalam. He previously contested two seats in 2021, winning only one, and will now be required to vacate one of the two seats under election rules. Former Chief Minister Ve Vaithilingam lost in the election.
The opposition DMK won five seats, while Congress secured one. Puducherry's 33-member assembly includes 30 elected members and three nominated members. The BJP's A Namassivayam, a senior minister, retained his seat.
The results come amid broader electoral developments in southern India, with actor Vijay's TVK winning two seats in neighbouring Tamil Nadu and one in Puducherry. The Election Commission is expected to formally notify the results soon. The swearing-in ceremony and allocation of portfolios will be announced by the Lieutenant Governor in the coming days.
