Congress Leader Pawan Khera's Future in Limbo as Supreme Court Weighs Bail Plea
Imagine being accused of something serious and not being able to leave your home because you're worried you might get arrested. That's what's happening to Pawan Khera, a senior Congress leader, right now. He's facing a defamation case linked to some strong words he spoke about Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's wife.
Khera's lawyer, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, argued in the Supreme Court that his client is being unfairly targeted. Singhvi said that the situation is so unusual that even the great Ambedkar would be shocked if he knew about it. He claimed that Khera is being threatened with arrest because of some mean things Sarma said, which have been widely reported.
Singhvi was very direct in his argument, saying that if Khera is arrested, it would be a huge mistake. He questioned why Khera needs to be locked up in the first place, and why the police can't just ask him some questions. Singhvi also pointed out that the prosecution's own statements make it clear that they think Khera is telling the truth.
But the prosecution, led by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, had a very different take on things. Mehta accused Khera of creating fake documents to harm Sarma's wife, and said that Khera needs to face custodial interrogation to figure out how he did it. Mehta also asked some pointed questions about foreign elements interfering in Indian elections.
In a surprising moment, Singhvi seemed to back down a bit, saying that maybe there were some mistakes made by Khera. This was the first time that the defence team acknowledged that Khera might have done something wrong.
Now, the Supreme Court will decide whether to grant Khera protection from arrest while the investigation continues. The case is part of a bigger war of words between Congress leaders and Sarma, who has made some strong attacks against Gandhi and Kharge in recent months. The centre of the case is Khera's allegations about Sarma's wife, which he claims holds three foreign passports and possesses undisclosed overseas assets.
