DMK Slams Congress Over Potential Tie-Up With Vijay's TVK in Tamil Nadu

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has condemned the Congress's possible support for actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in Tamil Nadu, with party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai labeling Congress leaders as "backstabbers." The comments come ahead of a Congress meeting to decide whether to back TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the recent assembly elections.
Annadurai argued that the Congress's five-seat win in Tamil Nadu was solely due to its alliance with the DMK, warning that any tie-up with TVK would undermine the ideologically driven INDIA bloc. He pointed to Vijay's post-election social media message, in which he thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi before any local supporters or party workers, as evidence of TVK's proximity to the BJP.
The TVK, founded by Vijay two years ago, has ruled out joining the BJP-led NDA and has refused their support, but has not ruled out external backing from other parties. It has positioned the DMK as its main political adversary, further complicating the Congress's decision.
The Congress leadership in Tamil Nadu has been tasked with making a recommendation on the proposed arrangement, with a formal decision expected after the party's internal consultations. The DMK has stopped short of confirming a severance of ties but said the onus is on Congress to uphold alliance principles.
