Landslides and Bridge Collapse Disrupt Life in Jammu and Kashmir
The Baramulla-Uri stretch of the National Highway in Jammu and Kashmir was closed near Lagama on Sunday following a heavy landslide, disrupting vehicular movement on the key route. The landslide blocked the road, prompting authorities to divert traffic via the Bandi-Paranpillan-Dachi route towards Uri to maintain connectivity while clearance operations are under way.
The incident is not isolated, as another landslide blocked the Doda-Kishtwar road in Doda district on Saturday, affecting traffic on the route. The Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police advised commuters to avoid travel on the Doda-Kishtwar road until it is fully restored.
In a separate incident, an under-construction portion of a bridge collapsed in the Bantalab area of Jammu, resulting in the deaths of at least three labourers. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary expressed grief over the deaths and announced actions, including the suspension of officials and the blacklisting of the contractor, while an inquiry is under way.
The series of incidents highlights the need for robust infrastructure planning and disaster management strategies in Jammu and Kashmir. The region's geography makes it prone to landslides and other natural disasters, which can have significant economic and social impacts. As authorities work to restore normalcy, there will be a focus on preventing such incidents in the future through better planning, monitoring, and maintenance of infrastructure projects.
