TVK Holds Talks on Government Formation After Emerging as Largest Party in Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) convened a meeting with its newly elected MLAs on May 5, 2026, at its Panaiyur headquarters on the outskirts of Chennai, to discuss the path forward after emerging as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly with 108 seats. The party fell 10 seats short of the 118 needed for a majority, making alliance-building or support negotiations essential for government formation.
TVK president C. Joseph Vijay, who won from both Perambur in Chennai and Tiruchi East, chaired the meeting with the party's 107 MLA designates—reduced by one due to his dual victory. The meeting marks the beginning of formal deliberations on securing legislative support, with party leaders expected to assess potential coalition options in the coming days.
The Election Commission is yet to confirm which of Vijay's two seats he will retain, a decision that will determine the final count of TVK's legislative strength. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday regarding election-related matters, while political observers await official statements on alliance talks.
