Karti Chidambaram Says Vijay Must Seek Alliances to Form Tamil Nadu Government

Actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party in Tamil Nadu with 107 seats in the 234-member assembly, falling 21 seats short of a majority. With no pre-poll alliance, TVK now faces post-poll negotiations as parties assess potential coalitions, amid reports of Congress outreach. Senior Congress leader Karti Chidambaram said it is Vijay's responsibility to seek support, not the parties offering it.
Karti Chidambaram, in an interview with NDTV, stated that the onus is on Vijay to reach out to other parties for a working majority, adding that securing support from 10 to 12 MLAs should not be a major hurdle. He noted that while the youth-driven mandate reflects a desire for change from traditional Dravidian politics, Vijay has yet to clearly define his policy direction or governance model. The Congress won five seats, its ally DMK won 59 and is leading in one, while AIADMK secured 47.
Vijay has previously ruled out alliances with either DMK or AIADMK, particularly due to AIADMK's alliance with the BJP. That leaves Congress and smaller parties as potential partners. Karti Chidambaram said he does not know what kind of government Vijay would lead, citing the actor's limited media engagement. He compared the political shift to democratic uprisings in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal, driven by restless youth seeking alternatives.
The Tamil Nadu Governor is expected to invite the largest party to form the government, and formal proceedings for government formation will begin in the coming days. TVK has not yet made an official statement on alliance talks, and the next legislative session is expected to determine whether Vijay can demonstrate majority support on the floor of the House.
