Ancient Kakatiya-Era Temple Demolished for Government School in Warangal

An 800-year-old Shiva temple from the Kakatiya era, bearing a rare inscription that referred to ruler Ganapatdeva as Maharaja and Rajadhirajulu, was demolished with a bulldozer in the Ashok Nagar area of Khanapur Mandal, Warangal district, Telangana. The site, under the jurisdiction of the State Archaeology Department, has been cleared for the construction of an Integrated School by the government.
Sreeramoju Haragopal, convener of the Kotha Telangana Charitrabrundam, confirmed the demolition and criticized the action as detrimental to Telangana's historical heritage. He stated the temple's destruction disregards its archaeological significance and institutional safeguards. The inscription is considered rare due to its dual title reference to the Kakatiya king, offering linguistic and political insights from the 13th century.
The State Archaeology Department has not yet issued an official statement. Officials from the education department overseeing the school project have not responded to queries. The incident has prompted calls for an immediate inquiry into the authorization of the demolition.
Historians and heritage activists are demanding accountability and a review of the project's clearance process. The court or relevant authorities may intervene if a formal complaint is filed. The site remains under observation as pressure builds for an official response.
