Manipur Sees Ongoing Protests and Tight Security After Militant Attacks
A man named Otkhothang Baite, also known as Othang Baite, has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with the killing of a Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) in Manipur last year. The SDPO, Chingtham Anandakumar Singh, was shot and killed during an attack by suspected militants on October 31, 2023. The NIA took over the case in March 2024 after the local police had initially filed a report.
The NIA found that the attack was part of a larger conspiracy to spread fear and terror in Manipur. Another accused, Kamginthang Gangte, was arrested earlier this month in the same case.
The ongoing protests in Manipur's Keishamthong are a different story. The public is demanding justice for two minor siblings who were killed in a militant strike on April 7. A 5-year-old boy and his 5-month-old sister were asleep at home when suspected militants allegedly threw a bomb at their residence. The attack also injured their mother.
The Meira Paibi Lup, a local organization, has called for immediate action and the arrest of the perpetrators by April 25. This demand has coincided with a statewide shutdown, which has paralyzed the state and left markets and commercial vehicles off the roads.
Security has been increased across sensitive areas, and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed to control the situation after clashes broke out in several locations. The situation remains tense, and the people of Manipur are waiting for justice to be served.
