Tamil Nadu Election Breaks Records with Highest Voter Turnout Ever
Tamil Nadu just witnessed the highest voter turnout in its electoral history. The Election Commission of India has confirmed that a massive 4,87,98,833 people voted in the April 23 election. This is an astonishing 85.1% of the 5.73 crore registered voters across the state's 234 constituencies. So, what made this election so different? One big reason is the implementation of the 'Simplified Electoral Roll' (SIR) system. By removing 57 lakh names from the voter list, the electorate was reduced from 6.29 crore to 5.73 crore. This helped increase voter turnout, making it the highest ever recorded in the state.
Women played a significant role in this election, with over 2.52 crore casting their votes. This is compared to over 2.35 crore men, who voted in the election. Women outvoted men by nearly 17.25 lakh, which is a 2.1% higher turnout than their male counterparts. This trend has been observed since the 2011 assembly elections, where women consistently outvoted men. The third-gender voters also made their presence felt, with 4,517 of the 7,728 registered voters casting their ballots. The Sulur constituency recorded the highest number of transgender voters, with a total of 77.
The Election Commission faced criticism for not releasing the data sooner, but the Tamil Nadu electoral officer, Archana Patnaik, explained that the EC had made elaborate arrangements for the counting of votes. There were 62 counting centres set up, where votes from all 75,064 polling stations and postal ballots would be counted on May 4. To ensure transparency and integrity, 4,624 micro-observers were engaged, supported by 10,545 counting personnel. A comprehensive security arrangement was also put in place, with 65 CAPF companies, state and local police deployed to maintain order.
The Tamil Nadu election will be counted on May 4, and the results are eagerly awaited. The Election Commission's efforts to increase voter turnout and maintain transparency have paid off, with the state witnessing its highest voter turnout ever. As the nation waits for the results, one thing is clear - the Tamil Nadu election will be remembered for years to come.
