Vijay Seeks Congress Support to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay has approached the Congress party to seek support for government formation in Tamil Nadu, following an election result that dismantled the long-standing duopoly of the DMK and AIADMK. The TVK emerged as the single-largest party with 108 seats in the 234-member assembly, ten seats shy of the 118-seat majority mark.
Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal confirmed the development on Monday, stating that the party's central leadership has granted the state unit full autonomy to decide on the coalition. Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar verified that Vijay submitted a formal letter to the Congress president, citing the need for a secular government to reflect the state's mandate.
The move follows a surge in support for the actor-turned-politician, particularly among youth and women voters, which has left the state in a phase of intense political negotiations. While the Congress leadership expressed dissatisfaction with its own performance, officials indicated a preference for supporting TVK to prevent a BJP-aligned administration from gaining ground.
The Tamil Nadu Congress unit is scheduled to meet in Chennai tomorrow morning to take a final call on the partnership. Vijay is expected to officially stake his claim to form the government with the Governor once the support of the Congress and other potential allies is formally secured.
