BJP's Kalita Majhi Wins Ausgram Seat in West Bengal, From Domestic Worker to MLA

Kalita Majhi, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate and former domestic worker, won the Ausgram Assembly seat in West Bengal, securing victory by 12,535 votes. Majhi, who previously earned Rs 2,500 a month as a household helper, becomes a first-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Purba Bardhaman district constituency.
Majhi, who began her political career as a booth-level worker, contested the 2021 Assembly elections and lost before being re-nominated in 2026. Her affidavit shows total assets of Rs 1,61,216, with her husband owning an 871 sq ft residential property valued at Rs 3 lakh. Two pending criminal cases against her are listed as non-serious. She hails from Kashemnagar in Mangalkot and comes from a family of limited means, with her father having worked as a daily wage labourer.
The BJP has highlighted Majhi’s election as evidence of its commitment to promoting grassroots leaders. Party National General Secretary BL Santhosh said the victory reflects the party's recognition of talent and hard work across social strata. Majhi’s candidacy aligns with BJP’s broader strategy in West Bengal of fielding candidates from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, including Chandana Bauri of Bankura, another grassroots worker contesting on a BJP ticket.
Majhi’s win underscores a shift in voter outreach and candidate representation in the state. The West Bengal Election Commission will formally notify the results, and the newly elected MLA is expected to take oath within the coming week.
