Congress Backs TVK as Allies Weigh Support After DMK's Tamil Nadu Defeat

The Indian National Congress has pledged support to actor-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the next government in Tamil Nadu, after the ruling DMK suffered a decisive defeat in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning only 59 of 234 seats. TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, falling short of the 118 needed for a majority, triggering immediate post-poll alliance negotiations.
Congress, which won five seats, cited the absence of "communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution" as a reason for backing TVK. The DMK's other allies, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), CPI, and CPI(M), each holding two seats, are also being approached by TVK leaders. Vijay has reportedly held talks with AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami and approached PMK, a BJP ally with four seats, deepening speculation about shifting political alignments.
DMK MP Kanimozhi acknowledged the electoral verdict, stating that allies have the "right to decide what they think is right" and that the people of Tamil Nadu appeared to have sought "a change." She confirmed that the DMK would introspect on its performance, noting the party's loss of key constituencies, including Chief Minister MK Stalin's Kolathur seat.
Kanimozhi reaffirmed the party's commitment to its ideological alliances but said the DMK welcomes the entry of other secular forces in Tamil Nadu politics. She declined to comment on specific support decisions by allies, stressing unity and resilience.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the schedule for government formation shortly, with TVK submitting a list of supporting parties. A confidence vote in the Assembly is likely within the next week.
