Congress Backs Vijay's TVK to Form Tamil Nadu Government, Sets Anti-Communal Condition

The Congress has pledged conditional support to actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to form the government in Tamil Nadu, demanding that no 'communal forces' opposed to the Constitution be included in the alliance. Girish Chodankar, AICC in-charge for Tamil Nadu, announced the decision on behalf of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and Congress Legislative Party, citing shared commitment to secularism and constitutional values.
The Congress's five MLAs will add to TVK's current tally of 107 elected members, bringing the coalition to 112 seats in the 234-member assembly. TVK, which won 108 seats in the recent election, lost one following a resignation, leaving it six seats short of the 118 needed for a majority. Vijay, who won both Trichy East and Perambur, is expected to vacate one seat, triggering a bypoll.
To secure majority, TVK is in talks with the VCK, CPI, and CPM, whose combined support would give it 119 MLAs. The party has also held meetings with AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami, signaling a potential split in the BJP-allied state party. Congress stated the alliance extends beyond government formation to include future elections for local bodies, Lok Sabha, and Rajya Sabha.
Vijay and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have committed to uphold the people's mandate for a secular and progressive government, particularly addressing youth aspirations in Tamil Nadu. The TVK's emergence as the single largest party ended 62 years of dominance by DMK and AIADMK in the state.
TVK and its allies are expected to submit a joint letter of support to the Governor in the coming days, ahead of government formation formalities.
