Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as Assam Chief Minister After State Polls

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned from his post on Wednesday, submitting his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. Officials confirmed the development, stating the move is a procedural requirement following the conclusion of the 2026 State Assembly elections to allow for the formation of a new administration.
The resignation followed a meeting where Assam’s Chief Electoral Officer, Anurag Goel, officially handed over the certified State Assembly election results to the Governor. This notification formally concludes the electoral cycle and enables the Governor to initiate the constitutional process of government formation.
Governor Acharya is now expected to invite the leader of the majority party or coalition to stake a claim to form the next government. Official consultations regarding the swearing-in ceremony and the transition of power are expected to commence immediately.
