TVK Emerges Largest Party in Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls, Falls Short of Majority
CHENNAI — The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam has won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly, making it the largest single party while falling short of the majority mark of 118. The result pushes the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to second and third place in the state’s first major electoral shift since the polls. The TVK secured 34.92 percent of the vote share in the election concluded on May 6, 2026.
The DMK and its allies, including the Congress, Left parties and others, won 73 seats with a 31.39 percent vote share. The AIADMK and its allies, including the BJP, Pattali Makkal Katchi, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam and smaller parties, won 53 seats with 27.22 percent of votes. No alliance has secured a simple majority, setting the stage for post-poll negotiations to form the government.
The Election Commission of India has completed the counting process and declared results across all 234 constituencies. The Governor of Tamil Nadu is expected to call upon the single largest party or a viable alliance to stake claim for government formation in accordance with constitutional provisions. The court will resume hearing on Tuesday.
