BJP-Led Alliance Retains Assam With 102 Seats in 2026 Assembly Polls

The BJP-led Northeast Democratic Alliance captured 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly, clinching a third successive term in office as results were declared late on May 5, 2026. The Congress-led Asom Sonmilito Morcha won 21 seats, with the Congress accounting for 19 of them.
The BJP, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland Peoples Front swept their respective strongholds to deliver the mandate to the NEDA coalition. Voter turnout and detailed vote shares were not immediately available in the initial results release.
The opposition ASM alliance failed to make significant inroads against the ruling combine despite a six-party campaign. The Congress remained the largest constituent within ASM but fell short of its target seat count.
The BJP-led alliance will begin government formation talks immediately, with leadership and council of ministers to be announced in the coming days. The new Assembly is expected to convene for its first session within two weeks.
