Vijay's TVK Emerges Largest Party in Tamil Nadu, Stakes Claim to Form Government
Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor Vijay, emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, securing 108 of 234 seats, though short of the 118 needed for majority. The party, founded in February 2024, achieved a 34.92% vote share in its electoral debut. Vijay won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East, but will vacate one seat, reducing TVK's strength to 107 pending a by-election.
Vijay has formally staked claim to form the government, submitting a letter to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar through Lok Bhavan. In the communication, he asserted TVK's position as the largest party and sought an opportunity to prove majority on the Assembly floor, requesting two weeks for the trust vote. The Governor has not yet issued a formal response.
Three post-poll alliance scenarios are under consideration: a left-secular coalition with Congress, VCK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML; a second involving Congress, PMK, CPI, CPI(M), and IUML (excluded by VCK due to opposition to PMK); and a potential tie-up with AIADMK without BJP, signaling a shift in Tamil Nadu's political dynamics. TVK leaders are in talks with several parties, though no formal agreements have been announced.
Political analyst Sumanth Raman stated that Vijay could form a minority government with outside support, surviving a floor test if opposition parties abstain rather than unite to bring it down. The precedent allows a single largest party to be invited by the Governor to attempt government formation. The court of public and legislative opinion will determine viability.
The Tamil Nadu Governor is expected to decide on the invitation to form government in the coming days, with a floor test likely within two weeks if TVK is invited.
