Telangana Government to Procure Jowar Alongside Maize to Support Farmers

The Telangana State Cabinet Sub-Committee has decided to procure jowar (sorghum) alongside maize to safeguard farmer interests, Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao announced on May 5, 2026. The procurement will be conducted using state funds, extending existing arrangements for maize purchases.
The government has been independently procuring maize without financial or policy support from the central government, Rao said. The inclusion of jowar aims to ensure remunerative prices for farmers who have faced distress in open market sales due to price volatility and low demand.
Officials will soon issue procurement guidelines and operationalise purchase centres in key jowar-growing districts. The state government plans to review the procurement progress in its next agriculture committee meeting.
