Punjab CM Seeks Disqualification of Seven Ex-AAP MPs Who Joined BJP

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann met President Droupadi Murmu in New Delhi on Tuesday and formally sought the disqualification of seven Rajya Sabha members who left the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) last month. The MPs—Raghav Chadha, Ashok Mittal, Sandeep Pathak, Harbhajan Singh, Rajinder Gupta, Vikramjit Singh Sahney, and Swati Maliwal—resigned from AAP on April 24, reducing the party's strength in the Upper House.
Six of the seven MPs represent Punjab, while Swati Maliwal is a sitting Rajya Sabha member from Delhi. Their exit marked a significant setback for AAP, which had earlier held 10 of the 16 Rajya Sabha seats allocated to Punjab and Delhi combined. The merger with BJP was confirmed by party leaders and acknowledged in parliamentary records.
Mann's request comes after Raghav Chadha met the President on April 30 and submitted a representation alleging that the Punjab government is targeting former AAP members through administrative actions. Chadha claimed the AAP leadership is pursuing 'vendetta politics' in response to the defections.
The President has not issued any public statement or order on either representation. The matter now rests with the Union Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs and the Election Commission, which may advise on disqualification under the anti-defection law. The court or President will determine the next course of action.
