Steve Vai converted a gardener’s shack on his Encino estate into an in‑house recording studio in 1996, a transformation that underpinned all his solo releases. The 10,000‑sq‑ft home, now on the market for $11.777 million, has become a symbol of how he blends living and music.
The estate was bought for $1.2 million and later saw $3‑4 million poured into renovations that added a gym, pool house and a 3,000‑sq‑ft addition for the studio. Vai’s wife, Pia Maiocco, helped design the space, insisting on exotic woods that give the studio a distinctive feel.
The studio, dubbed the Harmony Hut, houses custom gear and acoustics that allowed Vai to record, engineer and mix every solo album from the comfort of his backyard. The small outbuilding, once a maintenance shed, became an integral part of his creative process, earning a reputation as a legendary recording hub.
While the property is listed for sale, Vai plans to build a larger, state‑of‑the‑art studio at his new home, ensuring the Harmony Hut’s legacy continues even as he moves on. The sale, handled by Sotheby’s International Realty, will close later this year once a buyer is found.
