G. Sudhakaran Rules Out Congress Move After Winning as Independent in Kerala
G. Sudhakaran, a long-time CPI(M) leader, has ruled out joining the Congress or aligning with rebel factions, days after securing victory as an Independent candidate in the Ambalappuzha constituency during the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections. He won the seat with support from the United Democratic Front (UDF), concluding a six-decade association with the Communist Party of India (Marxist).
Sudhakaran attributed the CPI(M)'s poor performance in the elections to an 'ideological drift' within the party, claiming it had strayed from its core principles. He stated he would continue as an Independent legislator and did not plan to formally join any existing political formation.
His victory marks a significant shift in Kerala's political dynamics, particularly in the Alappuzha district, where anti-incumbency and internal dissent may have influenced voter sentiment. Senior CPI(M) leaders have yet to respond publicly to his remarks.
The Kerala Assembly will convene next month, and Sudhakaran is expected to take his seat as an Independent member, with speculation ongoing about his future political engagements.
