BJP Wins West Bengal Assembly Elections, Ends TMC's 15-Year Rule
The Bharatiya Janata Party has won 206 seats in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, defeating the ruling Trinamool Congress and ending its 15-year hold on power. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost her Bhabanipur seat to BJP's Suvendu Adhikari by 15,105 votes, while 22 of the 35 outgoing TMC ministers were defeated, including key figures in finance, education, and industry. The victory marks the BJP's first successful consolidation in eastern India, completing its long-aimed 'Anga-Banga-Kalinga' expansion.
Among the defeated ministers were Finance Minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, Education Minister Bratya Basu, Women and Child Development Minister Shashi Panja, and Labour Minister Moloy Ghatak. Shashi Panja lost Shyampukur to BJP's Purnima Chakraborty by 14,633 votes; Basu and Bhattacharya were unseated in adjacent Dum Dum constituencies by margins exceeding 25,000 votes. Several ministers had faced prior scrutiny, including Ghatak, who was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate in a coal pilferage probe.
A small group of senior TMC leaders retained their seats, including Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, Firhad Hakim, and Javed Khan. Chattopadhyay won Ballygunge by 61,476 votes, Hakim secured Kolkata Port by over 56,000 votes, and Khan won Kasba for the fourth time. Despite these wins, the TMC's overall collapse in the assembly renders the surviving members a diminished opposition.
The Election Commission is expected to announce the official timeline for government formation in the coming days. The BJP will propose its chief ministerial candidate, while the TMC has yet to issue a formal statement on its leadership path forward.
