TVK Emerges Largest Party in Tamil Nadu With 107 Seats, Faces Government Formation Challenge

Actor-turned-politician Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has emerged as the single largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, winning 107 of 234 seats in the 2024 elections, according to official results. The party fell 11 seats short of a majority, setting the stage for coalition negotiations as the governor prepares to invite TVK to form the government.
TVK is expected to seek outside support from parties currently aligned with the defeated Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance, including Congress (5 seats), CPI, CPIM, and VCK (2 seats each). A senior party leader cited the 2006 minority DMK government as a precedent, while sources suggest the Congress had prior talks with TVK, signaling fissures in the DMK camp ahead of the polls.
TVK may also approach the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), which won five seats, though an alliance with the AIADMK-BJP combine is ruled out due to Vijay's opposition to the BJP. Rhevanth Charan, TVK's 30-year-old MLA-elect from Maduravoyal, said the party will form a stable government, with decisions on alliances to be made by the high command.
The party made significant inroads in Chennai, capturing 14 of 16 seats, and Vijay won from both Perambur and Trichy East. TVK's debut campaign was framed as a direct challenge to the DMK, which won fewer seats despite leading a pre-poll alliance.
Officials indicate the swearing-in could occur as early as May 7, pending finalization of support arrangements. The governor is expected to issue a formal invitation shortly, with TVK likely to stake claim to form a minority government.
