Telangana's New Detention Center: A Step Towards Safer Deportation

The growing number of foreign nationals in Telangana has put a strain on the local law enforcement. Among them are illegal migrants, including Bangladeshis and Rohingyas from Myanmar. To address this issue, the Telangana police have created a new transit home in Jogipet, a facility designed to securely and humanely house foreign detainees while expediting deportation.
The Jogipet facility can accommodate up to 40 detainees and serves as a separate holding center for foreign nationals, away from regular jail inmates. It's designed to handle sensitive cases efficiently, particularly those involving illegal migration, narcotics, cyber fraud, and human trafficking. According to Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar, the facility helps manage foreign detainees securely and humanely while expediting deportation.
The data from the Telangana police shows a sharp rise in detentions in the post-pandemic phase, with around 292 cases and 55 deportations linked to visa violations and early drug-related offenses. However, by 2025, the trend shifted towards quicker removal from the country instead of long-term detention. Since 2018, a total of 196 foreign nationals have been detained in Hyderabad facilities, with 184 deported after due process.
Telangana Police have also stepped up enforcement of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, making it mandatory for hotels, hostels, and institutions to report details of foreign nationals within 24 hours. The Hyderabad police have issued an advisory to the public on the mandatory submission of Form II & III as per the Immigration and Foreigners Act. This move aims to ensure that all foreign nationals are registered and accounted for, making it easier to track and deport those with invalid visas or involved in illicit activities.
While the Jogipet facility has been made operational, officials say a permanent, larger transit facility at Cherlapally near Hyderabad is in the pipeline. This new facility will be able to accommodate more detainees and streamline the deportation process, making it safer and more efficient for both the public and the detainees.
