Supreme Court Orders Forensic Analysis of Audio Clip Linking Former CM to Manipur Violence
The Supreme Court has taken a big step in investigating the violence that shook Manipur in 2023. An audio clip has been making the rounds, allegedly linking former chief minister N Biren Singh to the violence. The clip is over two hours long, and the court wants to know if it's genuine or tampered with. The National Forensic Sciences University in Gujarat has been asked to analyze the clip and compare it with voice recordings of Singh.
The court's order comes after a non-governmental organization called the Kuki Organisation for Human Rights Trust (KOHUR) filed a petition alleging that Singh was involved in the violence. The organization claims that Singh incited and organized the violence against the Kuki community, leading to the deaths of over 260 people and displacement of thousands.
This isn't the first time the court has looked into the audio clip. Back in January, the court ordered a forensic examination of a 48-minute recording, which was also alleged to be a conversation between Singh and someone else. The court wanted to know if the audio clips were modified or tampered with in any way.
The court is taking a close look at the situation because the violence in Manipur was a major issue. The clashes started in May 2023 after a protest march was organized in the hill districts. The march was against a Manipur High Court order that granted Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community. The violence led to the deaths of over 260 people and displacement of thousands.
The Supreme Court is determined to get to the bottom of the violence and the role of the state machinery. The court has asked the National Forensic Sciences University to expedite the analysis and submit a report in a sealed cover. This is a major development in the case, and we'll be keeping an eye on it to see what comes next.
