UDF Takes Early Lead in Wayanad as LDF Minister Trails in Key Kerala Assembly Contest

The United Democratic Front (UDF), led by the Indian National Congress, has emerged ahead in all three Assembly constituencies in Wayanad during the early stages of vote counting in the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections. The results, still provisional, indicate a strong performance by UDF candidates in a district that has traditionally seen competitive contests between the UDF and the Left Democratic Front (LDF). Wayanad, a region with significant tribal populations and environmental sensitivities, is closely watched due to its representation by senior national leader Rahul Gandhi in the Lok Sabha.
In the Mananthavady constituency, CPI(M) minister O.R. Kelu, who holds a portfolio in the current state government, is trailing behind Congress candidate Usha Vijayan by 744 votes. The deficit is notable given Kelu's position in the ruling LDF administration and his access to state resources during the campaign. Vijayan, a local leader with deep grassroots ties, has campaigned on issues of forest rights, infrastructure development, and healthcare access—key concerns in the hilly, ecologically fragile region.
The UDF's early dominance across Wayanad—comprising Mananthavady, Sulthan Bathery, and Kalpetta—suggests a possible consolidation of anti-LDF sentiment in the district. Despite the LDF's sustained governance since 2021 and its aggressive development agenda, pockets of discontent over land policies, environmental regulations, and rural employment have persisted. The UDF appears to have capitalized on these grievances, particularly among tribal communities and small landholders, who view certain LDF-backed projects as encroachments on traditional rights.
As the final results remain pending, political analysts caution against drawing definitive conclusions from partial counts. However, a clean sweep by the UDF in Wayanad would mark a symbolic reversal for the LDF and could influence voter perception across northern Kerala. If confirmed, these outcomes may foreshadow a narrower majority for the ruling coalition or even a shift in power, depending on broader trends in districts like Kannur, Kozhikode, and Ernakulam. The final tally will clarify whether this early lead reflects a localized setback or a wider electoral wave.
