Shashi Shekhar Vempati Appointed Chairman of Central Board of Film Certification
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting appointed Shashi Shekhar Vempati as Chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on May 6, 2026. Vempati, former CEO of Prasar Bharati, assumes the role amid a reshuffle in leadership at major public broadcasting and certification institutions.
Vempati served as CEO of Prasar Bharati from 2017 to 2022 and was the first non-bureaucrat and youngest individual to hold the position since the organization's inception in 1997. An IIT-Bombay alumnus, he also held additional charge as CEO of Rajya Sabha from August 2017 to May 2019.
His appointment follows the naming of Prasoon Joshi as Chairman of Prasar Bharati on May 2, 2026. Joshi previously served as CBFC Chairperson from August 2017 and is now transitioning to lead the public broadcaster.
The CBFC is responsible for film certification and regulation of cinematic content in India. The board is expected to convene its next meeting within the coming week to brief Vempati on ongoing regulatory matters.
