West Bengal Elects New Government as 22 TMC Ministers, Including Mamata Banerjee, Lose 2026 Assembly Polls

A massive electoral upheaval in West Bengal has seen 22 out of 35 Trinamool Congress (TMC) ministers defeated in the 2026 Assembly elections, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who lost from her Bhabanipur constituency. The scale of defeat—63% of the incumbent cabinet—marks a significant rejection of the party's leadership and governance model. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) emerged as the principal beneficiary, winning key urban and rural seats across the state.
Ministers holding critical portfolios such as industry, education, power, transport, and women and child development were among those defeated. Senior leaders like Shashi Panja, Bratya Basu, Chandrima Bhattacharya, and Udayan Guha lost by substantial margins, with vote deficits ranging from 14,600 to over 49,500. The BJP won Shyampukur, Dum Dum Uttar, Dinhata, and Monteswar, among others, indicating broad-based voter shifts across regions and communities.
The Trinamool Congress has not issued an official statement on the results, while BJP leaders have declared victory and claimed a mandate for change. Election Commission officials confirmed vote counts and are proceeding with the formal declaration of the full results. The new Assembly is expected to convene within two weeks to form the government.
