DMK and AIADMK Win Northern Seats but Lose Ground to TVK in Tamil Nadu Polls
The Dravidian major parties, DMK and AIADMK, won multiple seats in northern Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly elections but saw their dominance eroded by the Tamilaga Vazhkai Katchi (TVK), which emerged as a strong challenger, particularly in rural and mid-tier constituencies. While both parties outperformed their Chennai-region results in terms of vote share, the number of seats won was lower than anticipated due to TVK's strategic gains.
In a major upset, DMK general secretary and senior Minister Duraimurugan finished third in the Katpadi Assembly constituency, losing to TVK candidate Dr. M. Sudhakar, who secured 69,868 votes. AIADMK's V. Ramu came in second with 63,998 votes, while Mr. Duraimurugan received 62,225 votes, ending his winning streak since 1996. The result marks a significant shift in local political dynamics and underscores voter dissatisfaction with established leadership.
The Election Commission is set to release full constituency-wise data by May 5, 2026. Statewide vote counting is complete, and the results will determine the formation of the new Tamil Nadu government, with party leaders convening in Chennai to finalize alliance strategies and ministerial allocations in the coming days.
